Different Kinds of Ribbon
Happy Saturday Stampers – are you ready to learn something about the Different Kinds of Ribbon today?
At the time of this post all the listed ribbons could be found in the 2021 – 2022 Annual Catalog.
I was looking at my ribbon stash the other day and wondered how many different kinds of ribbon there are. I did a little research and found out there are 9 different kinds. Well then I was curious about each so started checking them out. I thought I would pass along some of what I learned to you.
- Grosgrain – this ribbon goes back to the early 17th Century. Is was commonly used for making garments. It is thick, sturdy, and durable with a ribbed texture because of the corded fabric that makes up its weave. The “s” is silent so it is actually pronounced “grow-grain”.
Currently Stampin’ Up has a Highland Heather grosgrain ribbon.
2. Jacquard – a type of patterned ribbon woven on jacquard looms which were invented in France by Joseph Marie Jacquard using various yarn compositions and patterns. This ribbon is considered to be narrow fabric.
Stampin’ Up currently does not have any of this type of ribbon but here is a picture I found so you can see what it looks like.
3. Satin – has a glossy surface on one side and a matte surface on the other and is super soft. The slightly different color and texture of each side is due to a specific kind of weave that causes one side of the fabric to reflect more light than the other. Satin was originally made of silk and therefore only the upper classes of society could afford it. Today, many satin fabrics are made of polyester or cotton making them more affordable to everyone. This type of ribbon ties really soft loopy bows.
Stampin’ Up has a number of Satin ribbons. The new In Color open weave has a satin edge and we also have a beautiful Real Red satin one.
4. Picot Edge – has a unique edging to it. There are small decorative loops that run along the entire length of the ribbon. You usually find this edging on satin ribbon.
Stampin’ Up does not have any picot edge ribbon at this time.
5. Print – this ribbon has printed words, patterns, or images on them. The key is they are printed on not woven in.
There aren’t any of these ribbons in the Stampin’ Up catalog either.
6. Twill Tape – has a diagonal or zigzag weave that gives it great strength and support. It is made from a variety of cotton or synthetic fibers and is usually white or other neutral tones.
While we currently do not have any in our catalog but we have carried it in the past.
7. Seam Binding – usually used for hemming garments. This ribbon is soft and pliable. When used for garments it is usually wider – 5/8″. It is great for an unexpected present-trimming material.
Currently we have a narrow crinkled seam binding.
8. Organdy – is thin and transparent. It is lightweight and easy to work with, and the finish gives it an elegant look.
The 2021 – 2022 Annual Catalog has a number of ribbons that fit this category.
9. Velvet – has a plush texture and is soft to the touch like velvet. It is single faced so only 1 side has the plush texture.
We have 1 beautiful velvet ribbon in our Catalog.
We have a number of other ribbons that fall into the specialty category. Check out the Catalog to see which Different Kinds of Ribbon is your favorite!
